The Course

This course provides a comparative view of allopathic, traditional and holistic community- public health, and psychiatric-mental health within a nursing perspective as implemented in Tamil Nadu, India, in contrast to that provided within the United States. Classroom, and field observations and experiences are designed to provide students with both a broad overview and specific experiences within the foci of the course. The perspectives of nursing and holistic health care are examined through an emphasis upon contextual constraints and opportunities for physical and mental / emotional health at the levels of the individual and community / population.

  1. Monday morning in sun-filled colorful Chennai! Smooth flights until some t-storms over India, not bad tho. Arrived on time but one bag was missing resulting in our being at airport an extra 2 hours, but drivers were waiting & patient & one spoke English. Got to Poojapura where we are staying around 2:00 am in sore need of shower & sleep. All’s well this morning, there’s even easy connection to wireless & a MARVELOUS houseboy, Das, where I’m staying. We leave now to get currency exchanged & cell phone, then go to the ICTPH office, & tonite take 10:30 pm train to Tanjavore where we’ll be Tues & Weds. looking at the ICTPH village projects in health care & insurance by microfinance set-up. It’ll be interesting to see what progress has been made in the programs since last year. We are happy campers in a hot Chennai.
